Continue your exploration in the Cultural Triangle with a visit to Minneriya National Park, famous for the annual "Gathering" of elephants, and then head to Gal Oya, one of the most remote wilderness areas in Sri Lanka, for boat safaris and jungle drives. Experience the breathtaking landscapes of Horton Plains and its spectacular World’s End viewpoint, followed by an exhilarating jeep safari in Yala National Park, home to one of the highest concentrations of leopards.

Your adventure ends with a serene visit to Sinharaja Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for treks, bird watching, and night trails to witness Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity. Finally, unwind on the tranquil beaches of Mirissa, where you can embark on a whale watching excursion or simply relax by the Indian Ocean.

DAY 1

Destination: Negombo

Upon arrival in Sri Lanka you will be met and assisted by your very own Chauffeur. Then transfer to your hotel in Negombo, once a trading port for the Dutch and British now has been developed into a bustling modern town with a handful of reminders of its colonial past. Situated close to the international airport, it makes a convenient rest stop before heading inland to explore. The wide golden sand beach is dotted with fishing boats and the inland resort road offers a selection of restaurants and bars.

Once you check in at your hotel relax and recover from any jet lag.

DAY 2

Destination: Wilpattu

Today after breakfast check out from the hotel and leave for Wilpattu, located on the northwest coast lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka. The unique feature of this park is the existence of "Willus" (natural lakes) - natural, sand-rimmed water basins or depressions that fill with rainwater. On arrival you will settle into your safari camp.

Destination: Wilpattu National Park

In the afternoon you will be taken on a safari tour of the Wilpattu National Park in a private open-air jeep. Wilpattu has re-opened after the end of the civil war and offers visitors a wonderful nature experience with fewer visitors than Yala. After being hit during the war, the wildlife numbers are now on the rise again so keep your eyes peeled for elephants, deer, wild boar, wild buffaloes, monkeys, sloth bears, crocodiles and leopards, as well as a huge variety of exciting bird and reptile life.

(Your safari will be shared with other people staying at the camp and accompanied by an expert local tracker who will endeavor to help you have the best wildlife sightings possible. Conditions of the tracks around the park differ, depending on the time of year, but generally you should expect them to be bumpy and dusty.)

DAY 3

Destination: Wilpattu National Park

Enjoy an early morning game drive around Wilpattu National Park.

Return to your campsite for a late breakfast and unwind before another game drive in the late afternoon.

DAY 4

Destination: Wilpattu National Park

Early this morning you will be taken into the national park on another game drive for a chance to see some of Wilpattu's exciting wildlife. 

Return to the campsite in the mid-morning and enjoy breakfast before departure.

Destination: Dambulla

Afterwards check out from the campsite and leave for Dambulla, a small village and a central location in Cultural Triangle. The central plains area boasts ruined temples and ancient cities combined with national parks and glistening reservoirs. On arrival check in to the hotel.  

Destination: Minneriya National Park

In the afternoon commence a safari at Minneriya National Parl. This park is about 8889 hectares in extent and is an ideal eco-tourism location in Sri Lanka. It is home to Sri Lanka’s favorites such as spotted deer, Sambar and wild Asian elephants, particularly numerous in August and September when they migrate along a corridor from neighboring parks to feed on the fresh grass on the lake bed - an annual event known as "The Gathering". 

(Please be prepared for some rough and dusty road. National park can be crowded especially over weekends and festivals. Depending on the movement of the elephants you may visit the nearby Kaudulla National Park or Eco Park instead.)

DAY 5

Destination: Wasgamuwa National Park

Today after breakfast check out from the hotel and leave Gal Oya. En route you will atop at Wasgamuwa National Park to enjoy a jeep safari. The national park was declared to protect and to make a refuge for the displaced wild animals during the Mahaweli Development Project later was re-graded as a strict nature reserve. Wasgamuwa is one of protected areas where Sri Lankan Elephants can be seen in large herds. It is also one of the Important Bird Areas in Sri Lanka.

Destination: Gal Oya

On completion continue to Gal Oya, one of Sri Lanka’s most remote and least visited wilderness areas. On arrival check in to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 6

Destination: Boat Ride in Senanayaka Samudra

This morning enjoy the only experience in Sri Lanka that allows you to spot wildlife from the water. It’s a unique way to immerse yourself in the animals’ habitats. With a little luck you could spot elephants swimming between islands or bathing at the lake’s edge. A 2-3 hour safari by boat, and a scenic 40 minute drive from the lodge to the lake is perfect to explore the national park and surrounding villages.

On completion enjoy a delicious picnic lunch next to the river, waterfall or overlooking one of the park’s many breathtaking views and a swim in the river.

Destination: Gal Oya National Park – Jungle Drive

Later in the afternoon you will be taken on a jeep ride into the forgotten Nilgala section of the Gal Oya National park, once the protectorate of ancient royalty for the abundant medicinal plants and endemic birdlife unique to this ecosystem. Although shy and sometimes hard to spot, the park hosts most of the animals found on the island, some of the more likely species to look out for include herds of elephants, four species of deer as well as many bird species. You may also opt for the hike to the makara river mouth with one of the expert naturalists, to further experience the jungle and for the chance of seeing wildlife on foot.

DAY 7

Destination: Bird Walk & Hike

Early morning join a resident naturalist for a walk around the lodge, enjoying the abundant birdlife and beautiful surroundings. The walk offers a number of possible routes through the trees and around the nearby lake, to observe a wide range of bird species such as Kingfishers, Eagles, Kites and many aquatic birds. On completion return to the hotel and enjoy breakfast.

Destination: Nuwara Eliya 

Afterward check out from the hotel and leave for the beautiful town of Nuwara Eliya, set in the heart of Tea country and situated 1890 meters above sea level, is where the British succeeded in creating an English countryside with homes in styles from Georgian to Queen Anne. On arrival check in to the hotel.

DAY 8

Destination: Horton Plains

Leave your hotel early morning with packed breakfast and proceed to Horton plains, the highest plateau in the country. The hazy plain is a goldmine of flora and fauna, with excellent grassy terrains to trek and even rivers running slithering lines along the bases of its facades. It is one of the very important National parks in Sri Lanka especially for its topographical variations. On average, its plains reach up to 6,900 to 7,500 ft in height, and grasslands and cloud forests cover its surfaces. 

The Horton Plains National Park has unique vegetation and is known for its herds of sambar deer, as well as the flocks of rare and endemic highland birds that visit as well as reside here, and up to about 90 other species. Sri Lankan leopards have been spotted in this region, so you might want to keep your eyes peeled if you want to catch a glimpse of the elusive spotted predator! The most awesome physical feature of the Horton Plains is the escarpment that falls 880 meters to the lowlands of the southern region of the island. Aptly known as the ‘World’s End’ the view from the precipice of the countryside below towards the south coast is spectacular.  Don’t miss the most scenic Bakers falls, located within the National park, a tributary of the Belihul Oya.

On completion, head back to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 9

Destination: Yala

Today after breakfast check out from the hotel and leave for Yala, the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka, bordering the Indian Ocean. On arrival you will settle into your safari camp.

Destination: Yala National Park

In the afternoon commence a jeep safari in the Yala National Park. This park one of Sri Lanka’s premier eco tourist Destinations and is renowned for its variety of wildlife notably its many elephants. It is also home to the spotted deer, sambar, wild buffalo, sloth bear, jackal, mongoose and crocodiles. The peacock is easily the most famous of the birds in this park. Yala has a high concentration of Leopards although seeing these nocturnal carnivores still requires some luck.

(Your safari will be shared with other people staying at the camp and accompanied by an expert local tracker who will endeavor to help you have the best wildlife sightings possible. Please be prepared for some rough and dusty roads and be aware that this park can be extremely busy, especially over weekends and festivals. Also note you will proceed in your jeep to the park entrance to collect tickets prior to the park opening, in busy periods this process may take up to 45 minute.)

DAY 10

Destination: Yala National Park

Early this morning you will be taken into the national park on another game drive for a chance to see some of Yala’s exciting wildlife.

Return to your campsite for a late breakfast and unwind before another game drive in the late afternoon.

DAY 11

Destination: Bundala National Park

Early this morning check out from the campsite and proceed to Bundala National Park to enjoy a jeep safari. Bundala is an internationally important wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka which harbors 197 species of birds, the highlight being the greater flamingo, which migrate in large flocks. Bundala became the first wetland to be declared as a Ramsar site in Sri Lanka and was designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, the fourth biosphere reserve in Sri Lanka. Bundala National Park is an excellent choice for birders, and you've a rare chance of spotting crocs, wild boar, mongooses, monitor lizards, monkeys and elephants. 

(Your safari will be by a private jeep and accompanied by a local naturalist on availability. Please be prepared for some rough and dusty roads and be aware that this park can be extremely busy, especially over weekends and festivals.)

Destination: Sinharaja

Afterward leave for Sinharaja (Lion King) rainforests, occupying a broad ridge at the heart of the island’s wet zone. On most days the jungle is shrouded by copious rain clouds, which replenish its deep soils and balance water resources for much of southwestern Sri Lanka. Recognizing its importance to the island’s ecosystem, UNESCO declared the Sinharaja Forest Reserve a World Heritage Site in 1989. On arrival check in to the hotel.

DAY 12

Destination: Sinharaja Rainforest

After breakfast take a trek through the quaint paths of Sinharaja where placid undergrowth lie in wait for the appreciation of all who wish to indulge in an adventure to the tranquil wilderness of Sri Lanka’s world renowned rainforest. It is a treasure trove of endemic species including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Because of the dense vegetation wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry zone national parks. Experience the real beauty of nature and gain the opportunity of a lifetime to catch a glimpse of rare flora and fauna in Sri Lanka. Explore the lush green forest and marvel at the mystery that surrounds the jungles. The experienced and well trained guides will take you through challenging trails and educate you on the many endemic species, flora and fauna that call Sinharaja home.

Later in the evening take part of an exhilarating Night Trail through the mystical forest, where rare sightings of some nocturnal animals await. If you are lucky you may encounter the elusive Loris, a rare primate, along with an array of nocturnal creatures including frogs, moths, geckos, and sleeping lizards as the forest comes alive under the cloak of darkness.

DAY 13

Destination: Sinharaja Rainforest

Early morning enjoy a Bird Watching and Butterfly Observation Trail. Bird watching is particularly interesting as it is home to 95% of the endemic birds of Sri Lanka. This is the easiest way to enjoy great outdoors here, rich biodiversity and lovely unspoilt scenery, along the already established roadway. The trail starts from a disturbed vegetation with pioneering species and penetrates into an undisturbed secondary tropical sub-montane rain forest. Gradually sloping terrain at the beginning of the trail will make it an easy track, which a guest of any age group could make without much exertion.

Destination: Mirissa

After breakfast check out from the hotel and leave for Mirissa, a secluded and charming fishing village featured under the spot light for being one of the best whale watching destinations in the world. Apart from that a stunning crescent beach, great breaks for surfers, modest guesthouses and a string of simple restaurants at the back of the sand is what Mirissa is known for. On arrival check in to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 14

Destination: Whale Watching in Mirissa

Rise early morning and leave your hotel with packed breakfast for Whale Watching excursion in a shared boat. Arrive at the fishery harbor and take the boat and set out across the sea. 

Whale watching season starts in November and ends in April. Ocean is warm and calm during these months. In the warm Indian Ocean you can see Blue whales, Sperm whales, Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso's dolphins and striped dolphins. Sometimes we can see whales even in October and after April but ocean can be rough. Usually the ocean is rough in the afternoons and not suitable for whale watching. Swimming with the whales and dolphins is not permitted. 

(Preventative travel sickness tablets are recommended if you are not a good sailor. Remember to take sunglasses, sun hat and good sun screen protection. Please note the operation of the excursion is dependent on prevailing weather conditions on the day. Sightings of whales and dolphins cannot be guaranteed! The tours last 3-5 hours depend on spotting of whales and wish of the passengers.)
